Diving into creating stained glass can seem overwhelming at first glance considering all of the tools it requires and the many steps you must follow. My hope is that this blog can provide a little more information to you and other artists who are looking to try making stained glass. Before I start I want to be sure to preface the beginning of this whole blog to say I am not close to being an expert only an artist who has spent many hours making stained glass and has a little bit of knowledge to share. And let’s face it I can’t keep what I have to say in less than 2,200 words (the character limit) thus this blog was established and I can now write as many words as I desire. If you follow me on social media or know me in the real world then you know I love sharing tidbits of stained glass information whenever I can to whoever will listen! This Glass Goddess blog was born out of my attempt to share what I knew via weekly posts on Instagram but it quickly became obvious to me that it’s more of a visual platform geared towards swiping and tapping and not reading long paragraphs. I don't have a light table but have used my patio door on a sunny day.Thank you all so much for joining me on my very first stained glass blog post! I never thought I would ever be writing a blog as writing wasn’t ever my strong suit but here I am giving it a go.

If not, look for something else or an app to do that one function. If you already have something you are familiar with, try it out and see if it can do everything you want it to do.

I played with them but gave up and went back to Open Office Sheets. The 2 stained glass apps I know about look quite dated and clunky. Rarely do I need layers but if you have Illustrator, I'm sure that has it. A nice feature is that I can design just a portion and then flip or rotate to speed up the process. I can take an image and paste it into the sheet and then apply lines and shapes on top of it to re-create and then remove the image to leave just the rules/shapes. I can resize and print out onto thick paper. I use a 4pt thick rule to separate the pieces which is close to what my foil shears removes. It has all the "basic" shapes as well as lines and arcs. I use a spreadsheet freeware app for my designs. All I ask for in exchange for my time is a donation to the non-profit art program I run for my local community. Getting used to how it works takes patience and time.Įdit: Also, I'm willing to draft patterns of any image or design for my fellow redditors. I should add that I'm self-taught on Illustrator but have been using it for years and have lots of practice.

Here is my (long) video where I demonstrate how to create a pattern for stained glass in Illustrator. There are also freeware vector illustration programs, but I'm not versed in how to use them. As such, it's also kind of expensive (though there are ways to pirate slightly older versions, but you didn't hear that from me). It's the industry standard program for vector design work. It also allows me to transfer the lines to my Cricut plot cutter, so the computer cuts my patterns for me. It also allows you to scale images infinitely without them getting "blurry" or pixelated. It allows you to create very smooth curving lines and adjust them without erasing. Illustrator is a computer program made by Adobe (same makers of Photoshop) that is used primarily to create images using vectors instead of pixels (Photoshop is pixel based).
